Must-See Short Film SPOILED Making Waves

When coastal communities stand together for marine conservation, they protect the soil, ecosystems, and food systems our children inherit.

Why Our Oceans Are Vital to Family Health & Future Generations

When we think about holistic family health, our minds jump to daily nutrition, restful sleep, and clean air. Yet our breath and dinner nutrients reflect marine conservation and the health of our planet’s oceans.

Marine ecosystems—from the rich Cape Kelp Forests to the biodiversity hotspots along the Wild Coast Marine Protected Areas—regulate local climate, nurture delicate food webs, and sustain millions of families. This connection supports marine conservation by keeping oceans healthy and communities resilient.

In South Africa, where nearly 90% of mainland ocean territory faces threats from offshore oil and gas exploration, local coastal families and small-scale fishers are stepping up as guardians of our shared natural heritage.

A newly acclaimed South African short documentary, ‘SPOILED’, brings these vital voices straight to the global stage. Selected from 157 international entries across 29 countries, the film was awarded the prestigious ‘Terres de l’Ebre’ Award for Best Film Promoting Sustainability at the 10th Terres Travel Festival in Tortosa, Spain.

This recognition highlights a deeply moving reality: caring for our oceans is fundamentally about safeguarding human well-being, community livelihoods, and the future of our children.

The Heart of the Story: Voices from the Shoreline

Produced by WILDTRUST and Love Africa Marketing in collaboration with The Green Connection. Additionally, ‘SPOILED’ journeys along the rugged shorelines of the Northern Cape and the Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape.

Through intimate interviews with indigenous fishers, youth leaders, and scientists, the film reveals gaps in environmental governance. These gaps allow international energy corporations to pursue offshore drilling rights, often without meaningful consultation or consent, harming the environment.

“This film amplifies the voices of coastal communities who are too often ignored or sidelined in decisions about their ocean. I feel privileged to produce films that help give marginalized communities — and nature itself — a voice in decisions that affect our collective future.” — Lauren van Nijkerk, Campaigns and Communications Director at WILDTRUST

Connecting Ocean Preservation to Home & Household Health

  • Nutritional Security & Clean Food Systems: Healthy ocean ecosystems sustain artisanal fisheries, providing clean, fresh, plant- and sea-based nutrients vital for family brain and metabolic health, free from heavy industrial pollutants.
  • Community Resilience & Well-being: For coastal towns, clean waters mean sustainable livelihoods, rich cultural heritage, and safe spaces for children to connect with nature.
  • Climate Stability: Oceans absorb excess carbon and produce over half of the earth’s oxygen. Defending kelp beds and offshore reefs ensures long-term climate resilience for generations to come.

4 Practical Ways Your Family Can Nurture Our Oceans

1. Choose Sustainably Sourced Seafood

Look for SASSI green-listed or MSC-certified choices to protect overfished species and support responsible harvesting practices.

2. Reduce Single-Use Plastics

Plastic pollution directly damages marine food webs and fragile kelp ecosystems. Swap single-use packaging for reusable containers and organic cotton bags.

3. Engage in Public Consultations & Awareness

Follow platforms like stopthespoil.co.za to stay informed on active environmental impact assessments and support community-led conservation efforts.

4. Watch & Share Stories That Inspire

Gather the family to watch impactful documentaries that ignite curiosity, empathy, and respect for the natural world.
