Chrismarié Barnardt – Innovative Approach to Eco-Friendly Dental Care

Chrismarie Kindbrush

Confronted by the harsh reality of plastic pollution, Chrismarié felt compelled to take action. She embarked on a mission to create sustainable, eco-friendly oral care solutions that would not only benefit our health but also the health of our planet. This passion project led to the birth of The Kindbrush, a pioneering oral care range made from sustainable materials like bamboo and glass.

Chrismarié’s innovative spirit didn’t stop there. She also formulated the first Hydroxyapatite Toothpaste in a tablet in South Africa, aptly named Bite&Brush. Through The Kindbrush, Chrismarié aims to inspire individuals to make bite-size changes, embracing healthier smiles and a smaller plastic footprint. Join us as we delve into Chrismarié’s inspiring journey, exploring the intersection of oral health, sustainability, and innovation.

Tell us a bit about yourself. Are you more of a hunter or gatherer?

I spent most of my days with my fingers in mouths  or trying to figure out how to be an entrepreneur. I appreciate the small things, I value kindness, and I wish the pace of life was slower.

I would say a gatherer – that sounds less aggressive than a hunter : )

What motivates you to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle?

Seeing first-hand the number of plastic items that get washed up on the beach in Sea Point was the catalyst for me realising that we have a huge problem that humans created, and that only humans can solve.

What’s your signature eco-friendly habit?

Whenever I give someone a gift it’s always a voucher, tickets to see a movie, a pedicure, a massage, an outing to a new coffee shop, but never a physical gift, I feel we have enough stuff in our lives and homes.

If we came over for dinner, what would you serve us?

I’m a terrible cook, so I’m usually the guest.  I can do a charcuterie board when you come to visit : )

What’s your top gardening tip?

I live in a flat, so I don’t have my own garden : ).  I do have lost of plants; I like plants that I only need to water once a week.  My tip for anyone with a garden would be – use organic kitchen waste to feed the soil of your garden.

Do you make sustainable choices while traveling? Tell us more.

I never wrap my luggage in plastic, and I love my Bite&Brush toothpaste tablets in a travel tin.

Do you opt for sustainable clothing and beauty products? Any favorite shops or brands?

I think in South Africa we have such creativity and innovation, businesses that make products from sustainable materials and clean products.

I especially love Nude Foods in Cape Town and Mungo textiles.

What’s the most important environmental lesson for kids today?

I think kids should be spending more time outdoors as it fosters a connection with nature and encourages a sense of responsibility to protect it.  Also making kids mindful consumers who understand that their choices can either help or harm the planet.

What brings you joy and how do you find peace?

A walk along the ocean, a captivating book, a good playlist and podcast, quality time with my friends and a weekend with no plans.

Nothing brings me more peace than an afternoon nap and a long bath.

Ed’s note: The Kindbrush products can be purchased online via Faithful to Nature!
